Tychozorente

Ive been a mars volta fan for years. Tripped out psychedelic jams that destroy any train of thought, mixed with odd time grooves that would make King Crimson take note. If you get a little background on them, you learn that guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (who writes all parts of all songs) often writes inspired by film scenes, emotions, and color, translating this to music in his own way. In fact for one album (Francis the mute), he presented vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala with a serious of shapes to describe how the album progressed, and how to write the lyrics too it.

Omar is a personal hero of mine, currently stockaded in a small home studio in Mexico cranking out a solo album every month or two, while waiting for Cedric to finish lyrics for the new Volta album (and just finished a full length film.) What just blew me away tonight however, was finding his newest release Tychozorente... on which he doesn't even touch his normal instrument...the electric guitar.

Instead, Tychozorente is a purely electronic album, collaborated with long-time friend DJ Nobody, and featuring his wife Ximena on vocals. Its weird, electronic, psychedelic, with a hint of dub step....maybe a trace the old school, pre At-the Drive in era Defacto band???

Check it out. Seriously. Few musicians continually push themselves to achieve new levels of growth and musicianship as this man. fact.
