NPR's OnPoint brings us music critic Alex Ross, whose recent (but not first) book
Listen To This got excellent reviews (here's an
excerpt). This is such an interesting listen for any music aficionado. I am one to imbibe music rather than analyze it, but his critiques bring a new texture to the experience. Alex draws parallels between songs of different periods and genres – the bass line, for example of a Beethoven composition that we hear through Bob Dylan and beyond. Thought, feeling, and sound are explained as a whole, and so much more. This is about music, nothing to do with genre through of course that is inherent in the talk. Definitely worth a listen!
