Mellow Universe

Listen and be entertained!
1. Press play
2. Enjoy the stars and when that's over
3. Enjoy the animals (kill the sound on this one).

To human eyes, stars seem like some of the most unmoving objects in the universe. From the perspective of thousands of years, however, they swarm like bees.

Pole Folder

Pole Folder is a Belgian artist who straddles the line between techno and progressive house. His sound has a distinctive "laid-back yet driving" quality that is very tough to achieve. For example, his latest release "Motel" is muted and reserved but still paints a very dynamic picture. Skip to 4:00 if you are impatient :)

Joris Voorn

One producer who really caught my eye this year is Joris Voorn. The way he Dj's and makes music sets him apart from most of the big names, with short funky fresh loops sometimes only 2 beats long and vocal cuts galore. Instead of losing any melody after the drop and just blasting a large bass, his sets are all about building a groove. He doesnt need FX or epic bass to get the crowd going, managing to get by with a well designed groove and soundscape. Anyhow, as they say, "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." so here is a short 15 min mix of some of my favorite Joris tracks of the moment!

John Digweed!

Transitions, John's weekly 2 hour radio show, features an hour of Digweed in the mix followed by a hosted hour of another producer. His choices reflect his albums: Maetrik, Nick Warren, and Sei A have made recent appearances on all his latest productions.

A little taste of 'Eye Of The Storm,' a documentary by Pablo Casacuberta of John's last tour of South America, included in John's July release of double album, Structures

The album is a mix of techno, tech house, progressive house, deep house, chill out, breaks and dj tools (samples, beats, intros, acapellas, etc that tend to be short and simple).

I would even describe parts of it as minimal and abstract: a very modernist approach Digweed style, aka chill, mellow, and continuously smooth. The tracks and entire compilation really do wrap around the very title. As a structural composition, this work does not grant immediate satisfaction, but is an acquired listen. This is John's 25th album: thus you can imagine the real appreciation lies in the subtleties and nuances in his progressions.

Because this is meant to be listened to as an album, here are a couple of my favorite tracks that are also solid as an independent listen:

Also of interest is John's earlier release Bedrock 12.

John has a few favorite reoccurring artists, including Christian Smith, King Unique, Maetrik, Nick Warren, Quiver and Wiretappeur that have shown up in Structures and Bedrock. He also produces a few tracks with friend and co-founder of Bedrock Records, Nick Muir.

There is yet again so much variation in this album, but John resonates a very specific breed of mixing. His transitions are flawless.

Here are a couple tracks. If you want the original files, just let me know and I'd be happy to send! You can direct message me any way you like and we'll figure it out. I'm configuring a site right now, so in the near future I will be able to quickly upload all the tracks for your downloading convenience. 'Transitions' is a pretty easy find (in hq) from a simple online search. Megauplaod and soundtrack take awhileeee, otherwise I would upload everything all the time!

"Brahms, Bjork, and Beyond"

NPR's OnPoint brings us music critic Alex Ross, whose recent (but not first) book Listen To This got excellent reviews (here's an excerpt). This is such an interesting listen for any music aficionado. I am one to imbibe music rather than analyze it, but his critiques bring a new texture to the experience. Alex draws parallels between songs of different periods and genres – the bass line, for example of a Beethoven composition that we hear through Bob Dylan and beyond. Thought, feeling, and sound are explained as a whole, and so much more. This is about music, nothing to do with genre through of course that is inherent in the talk. Definitely worth a listen!

i dig

(kill the sound and enjoy a scene from Baraka to watch while you listen)

This track is not new, but it is to me! Off Montreal DJ/Producer Tiga's second album, Ciao!. Half the pleasure is definitely singing along if you're in that kind of mood. It's lighthearted and playful with a pseudo-vintage sound, and....some danceable/mixable potential. The one (obvious) cascading sound is fun and much of the interest here. It messes with you just a little // a tease of camaraderie.

If you live in Canada and watch So You Think You Can Dance you'll know it. I'm N/A.

You Gonna Want Me (12 Inch Dance Mix) by hayshe

I have yet to hear the whole album. I'll post other tracks if I like them a latte.

Hey Slackers

It's way too hard to keep up with everything. NPR has created a new music channel called The All Songs 24/7, a non-stop mix of every song ever played during the 10 years of All Things Considered!

Read more or go straight to the channel (iphone users can also get the app).
